The history of the Yoruba people is not well-known, with competing theories about whether the Yoruba came from the indigenous peoples who were present in the area before the 7th century BC or from the immigrants from Mecca who arrived in the 7th century.
The Kingdom of Ife and its successor, the Oyo Empire, were the dominant powers in the area until the 19th century. Yoruba names are used by the Yoruba who live primarily in Nigeria but also in the adjoining areas of Benin and Togo, as well as a large immigrant population in the U.S.
