Based on German with a blend of Semitic and Slavic languages, Yiddish evolved within the communities of Ashkenazi Jews that lived near the Rhine River in western Germany. As members of those communities migrated around the world, the language spread with them. Along the way, Yiddish has split into distinct dialects, some of which are very different from each other.
It is spoken within most Hasidic and many other Orthodox Jewish communities throughout the world. Yiddish names are used in these populations, the largest of which are in Israel and the U.S., where it is most often associated with a very large Orthodox Jewish community in New York.
