The Vietnamese people are descendents of the indigenous Southeast Asian peoples that settled the area around 4,000 years ago, and the peoples of South China, who began migrating into what is now northern Vietnam before the 3rd century BC.
Although the vast majority of Vietnamese live in Vietnam, there is a large population in the U.S. that migrated following the end of the Vietnam War. There are also significant communities in neighboring Cambodia and in former colonial power France. Vietnamese names are common among all of these populations, both at home and overseas.
