The Ukrainian people are descended from East Slavic peoples who are thought to have migrated into the East European Plain sometime before the 7th century. The Ukrainians are closely related to the Belarusians, with whom they shared a common culture and history until Belarus became part of the Russian Empire in 1795.
Ukrainian identity emerged during the early 20th century, along with the movement for independence, and even with significant Russian influence, Ukrainian culture as embraced by Ukrainians of all ethnicities remains unique. Ukrainian names are used within the country and among large populations in Russia, Canada, and the U.S.
