The region of Anatolia was originally settled by indigenous peoples related to their Caucasian and Balkan neighbors, but the area passed through the hands of the Assyrians, Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Armenians, and Byzantines at different times in history.
The arrival of the Seljuk Turks of Central Asia paved the way for the Ottoman Empire, which left Turkish communities in many countries after its dissolution.
