The Tatars are descendents of a group of Mongol tribes that migrated from the Gobi Desert in what is now northwestern China to Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the 13th century. They are ethnically a Turkic people with ancient roots in Siberia, but the Russian language and culture have had a strong influence on Tatar communities.
Tatar names are used by a number of Tatar populations spread across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, each of which has their own dialects and distinct cultures.
