The ancestors of the Swedes were Germanic tribes that arrived in northern Europe over 2,000 years ago. These tribes eventually developed into the Viking culture, which was a largely sea-faring culture that settled, traded, and sometimes marauded their way through Europe and even into the Middle East.
The Swedish Empire of the 17th century encompassed modern-day Finland, and today each country has a significant minority ethnicity from the other country. Swedish names used in these countries represent a Scandinavian culture famous for its contributions to music and to science, including the administration of the Nobel Prizes.
