Although modern Slovenes are a South Slavic people, Slovenia's diverse geography and central location between Eastern and Western Europe has contributed to an embattled history under many rulers, and a variety of cultures united under a single Slovenian identity that strengthened after the country became independent during the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Because the border has constantly shifted throughout history, a large number of Slovenes now live in countries bordering Slovenia, and there are also large populations in the U.S. and Germany. Slovenian names are used in these communities, as well as Slavic names found across Eastern Europe.
