Although the area now known as Slovakia was inhabited by many different peoples through the ages, including Celtic and Germanic tribes and the Romans, it wasn't until Slavic tribes arrived in the 8th century that Slovakian identity started to coalesce. Ruled by Hungary until the 20th century, the Slovaks have a history of fighting for autonomy.
Slovakians today are proud not only of their shared cultural heritage with the Czech Republic, but of their own hard-won independence. Slovakian names are used by the large majority of Slovaks who live in Slovakia, as well as large communities in the U.S. and the Czech Republic.
