The Serbs are a South Slavic people descended from the ancient peoples of the Balkan Peninsula, Celtic tribes that invaded in the 3rd century BC, Greeks, Romans, and finally the Slavic tribes that moved into the region beginning in the 6th century.
The Byzantines were also influential in creating Serbian culture. Although many Serbian families fled during the centuries of political turmoil, Serbians today take pride in having a state of their own. Serbian names are also used in large communities in the other Balkan states, Germany, and Austria.
