Most Scandinavians are descended from the North Germanic tribes that lived in the areas in and around modern Denmark, including southern Norway and Sweden and northern Germany. The most well-known early Scandinavian group was the Vikings, whose expansion was a significant influence in Europe, although modern Scandinavia is just as well-known for its progressive, egalitarian societies.
Norse mythology is also famous among literary scholars, and many Scandinavian names are derived from mythological names.
