This region of the world contains a great deal of cultural and linguistic diversity drawn from the native indigenous peoples and the Bantu, as well as more recent European populations.
Some of the major languages spoken here are Zulu and Xhosa, from Bantu ethnic groups, the San languages spoken by the Bushmen, one of the most ancient populations in the world, and Afrikaans, which evolved from the dialects spoken by Dutch settlers in South Africa in the 17th century. Southern African names are drawn from these languages and many more that have been brought by various migrating populations.
