The language of Rome was Latin, and although the Romans did borrow some names from the Etruscans and the Oscans, the names were Latinized and used extensively by Latin-speaking Roman communities. Given names were rarely used in the public sphere; most people were referred to by their family and clan names.
In addition, many people would share the most popular names, making the name useless to distinguish between people. Roman names today, however, are considerably more unique than they were in their original incarnations.
