Located on the northern Mediterranean shore between the Italian and Iberian Peninsulas, Provence has seen many settlements throughout history. From some of the oldest European civilizations, to the Celts, Greeks, Romans, Germans, Arabs, and Normans, Provence changed hands innumerable times until the last Provençal king died and the territory became French in the late 15th century.
Although the Provençal language is spoken primarily in France, it might be more likely to survive in Italy, where a closely related dialect is spoken whose speakers use the language daily. Once the language of a great literary tradition, Provençal can be seen today in the use of Provençal names.
