The Poles are descendants of West Slavic tribes that started migrating into the area around 900 AD. Before the Slavs arrived, however, the area of Poland was at different times inhabited by Celtic, Germanic, and Baltic tribes, as well as the Romans, and Polish culture retains elements of all of these cultural predecessors.
Historically, Polish culture itself could be distinguished based on region, but after years of political turmoil, Polish identity has become more uniform. This turmoil also led to large populations of Poles living in other countries. Many millions of people with Polish names now live in the U.S., Germany, Brazil, Israel, and Canada.
