The Native American people are descended from Asian peoples who migrated to the Americas, either by land across the Bering Strait or by sea across the Atlantic Ocean, at least 15,000 years ago. At the time of the Europeans' arrival, the Americas were populated by thousands of cultures and languages, many of which were unrelated to each other.
Although the Native American population has been devastated over the last five centuries, strong revival movements that took root in the 20th century have preserved many languages and cultures. Native American names are used by the indigenous groups throughout the two American continents.
