Information about the Māori names

The Māori are a Polynesian people whose ancestors, who may have come through East Polynesia from pre-China Taiwan, arrived in New Zealand by boat over 3,000 years ago. All Polynesian peoples of the South Pacific began with the same cultural and linguistic foundations, but years of solitude gave way to the development of distinct cultures. As the only indigenous people of New Zealand, the Māori culture enjoys a high degree of recognition and respect in its homeland. Māori names are used by the Māori and some Europeans in support of the revival movement that strives to protect this ancient culture.
