Surrounded by Greeks, Albanians, Bulgarians, and Balkan peoples, the people of Macedonia are related to many of their neighbors as well as the Slavic tribes that began to move into the region in the 6th century. Like many territories of former Yugoslavia, Macedonia first saw a national identity emerge in the 19th century, and due to political history, many Macedonians now live outside of their home country.
Although they speak a Slavic language, the Macedonians belong to a culture with many Byzantine and Balkan influences. Macedonian names are used in communities throughout the Balkans and many other European countries.
