The Lithuanians descended from the Baltic people, who started settling in the area around 4,000 years ago as part of a mass migratory movement through what is now Eastern Europe. Although the Baltic people once occupied vast territories, they were gradually pushed into the lands just east of the Baltic Sea, where all the Baltic peoples, except the Latvians and Lithuanians, eventually died out.
Most modern Lithuanians live in their home country, but over a quarter of them live in the U.S., the U.K., or Brazil. Here, Lithuanian names are used to represent the endurance of one of the last Baltic cultures.
