Historical Limburg was a region covering what is now the intersection between Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The Duchy of Limburg was established by the Roman Empire in 1065, and since then the lands have changed hands a number of times.
In Limburg Province in the Netherlands, Limburgish has official status and is used frequently. However, the language is not recognized in Germany or Belgium, which makes it difficult to learn how many speakers there are in those countries. Nevertheless, Limburgish names are still used by many of the region's families.
