The Latvians are descendants of the Baltic peoples that began settling in the area around 4,000 years ago during a migration that reached from the Caspian and Black Seas all the way to the far shores of the Baltic Seas. Over time, the Eastern Balts were pushed west into the lands now known as the Baltic countries.
Of the many Baltic cultures that developed throughout history, only the Latvians and the Lithuanians are left. The areas where Latvian names are used contain diverse regional influences, but with the vast majority of Latvians still living in their home country, they retain a strongly unified identity.
