With their roots in the Middle East, where the first Israelite state was established in the 9th century BC, the Jewish people began to migrate around the world in the 6th century BC. Wherever they settled, they drew elements of the local cultures into their historical traditions, in some places creating such distinct identities as the Ashkenazim and Sephardim, and even new languages like Yiddish.
Jewish names are an important means by which the hundreds of Jewish communities can remain connected to each other and to their ancient culture.
