The origins of the Japanese people are a mystery, although many scholars believe them to be descended from both the people that inhabited the islands at least 30,000 years ago and the immigrant groups who arrived from Southeast Asia around 400 BC.
Centuries of isolation interspersed with periods of intense contact with China and later Europe led to the development of an elaborate culture that has been well-preserved and made famous through the modern globalization age. The Japanese have a strong sense of national identity, which includes immigrated citizens. Japanese names are part of this identity, whether used by native or new citizens in Japan or abroad.
