The country of Indonesia is comprised of over seventeen thousand islands, many of which were relatively isolated for much of their history. As a result, there are over three hundred ethnic groups scattered throughout the country and over seven hundred languages and dialects belonging to three major language families, the most widely-spoken being Indonesian (a dialect of Malay), Javanese, and Sundanese.
Indonesian names are therefore drawn from a wide variety of sources and may conform to different naming systems. Due to Indonesia's extensive trade and economic relations with other countries, there are large Indonesian populations in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Singapore, and elsewhere.
