The Igbo people may come from a population that began to migrate west from Central Africa more than 8,000 years ago. Historically, Igbo culture has consisted of subcultures, one of the most prominent of which was the Kingdom of Nri, which reigned for 1000 years until the early 20th century.
The Igbo people were one of the most heavily affected by the Atlantic slave trade. As a result, many people of historical Igbo descent live in the Caribbean islands and in the U.S., as do many more recent immigrants. Igbo names represent this rich culture, one of the most well-known in West Africa.
