Icelanders are closely related to the Norse Vikings and their Celtic servants who began to settle Iceland in the 9th century and continued for many years, until almost all of the land had been claimed. After years of Norwegian and Danish control, during which Iceland developed a culture independent of its Scandinavian brethren, Iceland became independent in 1944.
The Icelandic language has not changed significantly over the centuries, and Icelanders can read their historical sagas as originally written. Thus the Icelandic names found in the historical literature are as familiar to modern Icelanders as they were to their original bearers.
