The Hungarian people come from a nomadic culture that migrated west from the Ural Mountains and settled in the area before the 10th century. The Hungarian historical legacy includes one of the largest and most influential empires in Europe. Because the country was so large, it lost much territory in 20th century border revisions.
As a result a large number of Hungarians now live in the countries neighboring Hungary, including Romania, Slovakia, and Serbia, and there are many immigrant communities in the U.S. and Canada. Hungarian names are largely drawn from historical figures, including saints and royalty.
