The Hawaiians are a Polynesian people who traveled to the islands from farther west sometime before the 9th century. Although up to 95% of the native Hawaiians may have died following the arrival of Europeans and their diseases in the late 18th century, the population has since grown and there are currently half a million people of Hawaiian descent.
After having nearly become extinct, the Hawaiian language is on the rise, and native Hawaiians, as well as many non-Hawaiians who have made the islands their home, use Hawaiian names to honor the heritage and promote the revival of the language and culture.
