The ancestors of the Georgians have inhabited the area to the south and east of the Black Sea for around twelve thousand years, and so Georgian culture is intertwined with their continuous history on the same lands. Among the Georgian people, regional identification is strong and pervasive, even encompassing Georgians living in Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran.
Each region has its own dialect and distinct cultural variations. However, the underlying Georgian national culture is reflected in the Georgian names used in these communities and in other places with large populations, including Russia and the U.S.
