The Frisians are descendants of the people who settled in the lands of the Frisii, a Germanic tribe who lived in the North Sea coastal regions in what are now Germany, the Netherlands, and southern Denmark. Although the original Frisii were scattered due to flooding and Roman decree, the Anglos and Saxons who resettled the area after the 6th century were called Frisians.
Because of their shared history, the modern-day Frisians and English are closely related, as are their languages. Although most speakers of Frisian are bilingual in their country's primary language, Frisian names are still used within these communities.
