Information about the Finnish names

Although often grouped with the Scandinavian peoples, the Finns do not share those peoples' Germanic ancestry. Despite this distinction, the Finns and Swedes have historically been close, and large numbers of each ethnic group live in the opposite country. Outside Sweden, the largest Finnish populations are found in Canada and Russia. Traditional Finnish names, which had practically disappeared by the 16th century, became popular again in the 20th century. Many new Finnish names were created during this time as well.
