The Estonians are possibly the oldest ethnic group still living in Europe. While they are traditionally grouped with Latvians and Lithuanians as Baltic peoples, Estonians are descended from the same peoples as the Finns, and Estonian culture is as much Nordic as Baltic. Although the Estonian national movement became popular in the 1800s, it wasn't until 1991 that Estonia gained its final independence.
Because of this struggle, Estonians protect their culture and national identity fiercely, and the vast majority of Estonians live in their homeland. Estonian names are used in small communities in other countries as well, including Finland, the U.S., Canada, Russia, and Sweden.
