The Danes were a North Germanic tribe that inhabited the Jutland Peninsula in northern Europe. The Danes were one of the Viking groups that dominated the trade routes along European rivers and around the North Atlantic. Modern Danes take pride in their millennium-old monarchy, as well as their place in the larger culture of Scandinavia.
Since Danish identity is mostly based on being a citizen rather than being an ethnic Dane, a large majority of Danes live in Denmark. However, large populations in many other countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Brazil, also identify as Danish and use Danish names.
