The Czechs are descendants of Slavic tribes that moved into the area sometime before the 6th century. Over the years, Czech nationalism grew stronger, and after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Czechs and Slovaks joined together in the newly established republic of Czechoslovakia.
After decades of political turmoil, the Czech Republic emerged in 1993, and thousands of Czech families who had previously left the country have returned to their homeland. Czech names have mostly Slavic or Christian origins, and since half of all Czechs live outside the country, Czech names are often encountered in the large populations that live in other countries.
