Croats are a South Slavic people, like other inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula, but Croatian culture remains distinct from its neighbors. An early Croatian revival called the Illyrian movement was significant in distinguishing Croatian identity within the larger group of South Slavs.
Historical forces have led many Croats to immigrate to other countries, and today perhaps half of all Croats live in countries other than Croatia, including large populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the U.S., Chile, Argentina, and Germany. Croatian traditional names, largely Slavic in origin, have seen widespread use since they were revitalized in the 20th century.
