Although Carthage was inhabited by indigenous people, through history it has fallen under the control of various powers, including Carthage, Greece, and various Germanic tribes. Under the administration of Rome, Tuscany, or Pisa, the indigenous people picked up the Latin or Italian dialect that was to become Corsican.
Although Corsica eventually ended up in French hands, its culture shows a strong Italian influence. Corsican names are used by the people of Corsica, who are largely bilingual in Corsican and French, and a few communities in northern Sardinia where the dialects are considered to be Corsican rather than Sardinian.
