Descendants of ancient Celtic tribes that migrated from mainland Europe to the British Isles before the 6th century BC, the Cornish are more closely related to the Welsh and Scottish than to their English countrymen.
Although the Celts dominated the Isles for centuries, the Romans and then Anglo-Saxons drove them out of central Great Britain. The remaining Celtic cultures were split apart and largely endangered until the 20th century. Cornish names are used by people of Cornwall to represent the unique history that sets them apart from other Brits and to support recent efforts to revive the language and culture.
