With over one billion native Chinese speakers, including most of China, many areas in Southeast Asia, and large immigrant communities in several countries, Chinese names are in use everywhere. Historically, China was so influential that many countries in the region use Chinese naming practices and/or characters, if not the actual names.
Although it is common for Chinese who live in or do business with Western countries to select Western names in order to facilitate communication, they often continue to use their Chinese name with family and close friends.
