While Celtic-speaking tribes were once distributed throughout Europe, the Romans eventually pushed them into the British Isles. The Anglo-Saxons further squeezed the Celts into the north and west – now Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the British region of Cornwall – and into the French region of Brittany.
Because of this shared historical struggle, Celtic names are strongly associated not only with the preservation and revival movements of individual languages, but also with a universal Celtic identity.
