The Catalans originated in the area of Catalonia, where ancient Celts and Iberians merged and fell under Roman rule, which brought Latin to the area, in the late 3rd century BC.
During centuries of other rulers, Catalan identity developed into a powerful force, and this nationalism continues today in many communities in Catalan-speaking areas. Catalan names are used primarily in this region but also in some migrant communities around the world.
