Bulgaria is a unique blend of Slavic and Central Asian history. The Slavs and the Bulgars from Central Asia formed the First Bulgarian Empire in the late 7th century, and after throwing off Byzantine rule, the Second Bulgarian Empire emerged in the late 12th century. Finally, after centuries of Ottoman control, the country became an independent state in 1878.
With three major incarnations and a history of overcoming outside rule, Bulgaria has a strong nationalist culture, and Bulgarian names drawn from history represent this heritage in the homeland, as well as in large communities in other countries, including Turkey, Ukraine, and the U.S.
