This region, sometimes called Little Britain, is one of the six remaining Celtic nations, the other five of which are on the British Isles. Although Rome conquered the original Celtic tribes there, British Celts began to migrate to the area after the 3rd century, when the Anglo-Saxons invaded the British Isles.
Brittany was independent for some years, but it was eventually defeated by the French in the 15th century. Although Breton is not an official language of France, Brittany has many strong language and cultural revival movements. Breton names represent a desire to keep this historical culture alive.
