Although Bosniaks are, like their Serb and Croat neighbors, a South Slavic people, they maintain a distinct culture that blends Slavic, Ottoman, and ancient histories, Balkan traditions and customs, and Islam.
During the last century, regional conflicts drove many families to other countries, most significantly the U.S., Germany, Austria, Turkey, and other Balkan countries, where Bosniak communities continue to speak Bosnian and maintain strong ties to their homeland. Although many Bosnian names come from other languages, the Bosnian language has left its own unique mark on many of them.
