The Basques are an unusual people in that their language is unrelated to any other known language and their origins remain a mystery, but they have possibly lived in the area for up to thirty thousand years.
Although they are a distinct ethnic group with a strong culture, their history is intertwined with that of the Iberian Peninsula, especially Spain and France. More than half of all Basques now live outside of those two countries, with large populations in Argentina, Chile, and Cuba. Basque names help communities maintain their cultural connections, even if they no longer speak the language.
