Azerbaijan stretches west from the Caspian Sea into the Caucasus Mountains. One of the Turkic nations, Azerbaijan is rooted in the constantly changing empires of Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Despite its lengthy history, however, the country is now regarded as one of the most modern, developed Muslim countries.
Due to historical border treaties, more than half of all Azerbaijanis now live in Iran, with up to a third living in Azerbaijan, and significant populations in Turkey and Russia. Despite the political divisions, however, Azerbaijani language and culture thrives across borders.
