Armenia is located in the Caucasus Mountains on the isthmus between the Black and Caspian Seas. Although surrounded by the regions of Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Armenians speak a unique Indo-European language without any known relatives. Armenia was the first official Christian state, and the Armenian language is closely identified with the Armenian Apostolic Church.
During World War I, many Armenians moved to the West. Today around half of the world's Armenians live in large diasporic communities in Russia, France, the U.S., and other countries, and Armenian names help link each new generation to the ones that came before.
