Located in the mountainous Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, the lands now known as Albania were, at various times in history, Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman before the country first declared independence in 1912.
Albania was settled around the same time as other Balkan countries, but the origins of the Albanian people have been lost to history. The Albanian language is unrelated to any other Indo-European language, and uniquely Albanian personal names were recorded as early as the 4th century.
