What's In a Unisex Name?

The usage of unisex names varies widely in cultures around the world. Some cultures have many unisex names which often refer to religious or philosophical concepts (e.g., Happy in English, Noël in French, or Haneul in Korean). However, since given names are one of the primary markers of gender in cultures around the world, many cultures have few, if any, unisex names. Especially in languages that have grammatical genders, unisex names may be impossible or even illegal.

In some Western languages, including English, the use of unisex names increased significantly during the last part of the 20th century. In these languages, a modern unisex name typically starts out as a male name but over time becomes more popular for girls than for boys. Some names trend the opposite way, but very rarely is a unisex name equally popular for boys and girls at the same time. As a result, a name is more likely to be truly unisex across generations rather than within a certain age group. Whatever the case, people with unisex names enjoy the individuality and uniqueness that having an unusual and sometimes surprising name gives them.
