The Yoruba language is a Niger-Congo language spoken by about 20 million people in West Africa, mainly in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. The origins of the Yoruba language are not well known. The land was settled before the 7th century BC, although it is possible that the Yoruba are not the descendents of these indigenous peoples, but instead migrated from the east.
Yoruba was standardized with the publication of the first grammar in 1843 and came to be written in a modified Latin alphabet a few years later. Yoruba is related to hundreds of other Benue-Congo languages spoken in the area, including Igbo.
