Information about the Welsh language

The Welsh language is a Celtic language of the Indo-European language family spoken by about 750,000 speakers, mostly in Wales. The Celtic languages were brought to the British Isles up to 3500 years ago, and sometime around the 6th century, Welsh began to separate from the other British dialects. During the 19th century, large numbers of English immigrants moved into Wales, and Welsh succumbed to English as the most-spoken language. However, efforts at revitalizing the language throughout the 20th century have succeeded in stopping the decline, although recovery has been slow. All of the language's Celtic relatives are endangered as well.

Old Welsh was an early form of the Welsh language that was spoken between the middle of the 6th century and the early 12th century when it developed into Middle Welsh. Old Welsh poetry dating to the 8th century or earlier has been found.
